A New York court has delivered a verdict against the elected President of the United States, Donald Trump, in a fraud case. The punishment assigned is "unconditional release," which means he is found guilty but will not face fines, probation, or imprisonment.
“I wish you good luck as you begin your second presidential term,” reports the BBC, quoting Judge Juan Merchan during the sentencing.
He added that the sentence he imposed on Trump “will be the only lawful verdict that does not infringe upon the highest office in the country.”
Trump participated in the hearing via video link. Before the verdict was announced, he told reporters at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida that regardless of the outcome, his team would appeal. “This judge should not have been involved in this case. This is far from over,” he stated.
Donald Trump was convicted last May for illegal payments to a porn star across 34 counts as determined by a unanimous jury decision.
