Professor Shahlo Turdikulova, the Vice President of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan, has been elected as a member of the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS).
She is the only representative from the CIS countries and Central Asia among this year's participants. Thus, Turdikulova joins the ranks of seven Uzbek scientists honored to be part of this leading international scientific organization. TWAS President Professor Kourysha Abdul Karim congratulated Shahlo Turdikulova, highlighting her contributions to science and her advocacy in developing countries.
The official presentation of the academician diploma will take place in early 2025 at the headquarters of the World Academy in Trieste, Italy. This year, TWAS welcomed 74 new members, including 24 women, marking a record intake in the organization's history. The total number of TWAS academicians has reached 1,444.
Shahlo Turdikulova is one of the most prominent figures in Uzbek science. She is recognized as a co-author of the Uzbek-Chinese vaccine against COVID-19. Her research has been published three times in the prestigious journal Nature. In April 2024, Turdikulova became the first woman to hold the position of Vice President of the Academy of Sciences in its 80-year history. Additionally, she founded a scientific school in human genetics and biotechnology at the Center for Advanced Technologies.
