The legislative chamber has presented for public discussion the draft law "On the Approval of the Concept of State Policy in the Religious Sphere and Ensuring Freedom of Conscience for Citizens in the Republic of Uzbekistan."

The document outlines a series of principles aimed at ensuring secularism in the regulation of the marriage institution:

  • Legal norms in this area should be based on secular values such as freedom of conscience, the rule of law, and interethnic harmony;
  • A religious marriage ceremony is allowed only after the official registration of the marriage with the civil registry office;
  • It establishes the mandatory voluntary consent of both parties to enter into marriage.

The draft law also proposes measures to prevent the promotion of polygamy and cohabitation with multiple spouses, as well as to support traditional marital relationships that comply with the law and national values.

The public discussion of the draft law will continue until February 9.
