The "Don't Be Silent" project published the story of Zamira (name changed), who met Javokhir in 2017. In 2021, after going through a religious marriage ceremony, Javokhir and Zamira began living together.
“At first, everything was fine. Javokhir wanted Zamira to have a child. She became pregnant, and Javokhir changed. He became irritable, and arguments between him and Zamira increased. He started to raise his hand against her, even though she was pregnant.”
Zamira had to take on extra work to support herself, pay for medical check-ups, and prepare for the baby’s arrival, as Javokhir completely stopped helping her.
“In May 2022, Zamira first sought help from law enforcement, obtaining a restraining order. However, the beatings did not stop. She contacted the authorities several times and received restraining orders, but the humiliation and physical abuse from Javokhir continued. In October 2023, Zamira again reached out to law enforcement. She was issued a restraining order, but had to withdraw her complaint. Javokhir threatened her with his brother's connections, saying that his brother would 'get him off the hook' no matter what, and that paying a fine did not scare him,” the report states.
In the summer of 2024, she found out she was pregnant again. Javokhir was not happy about the news and began threatening her, demanding that she terminate the pregnancy.
“Fearing for her life, she decided to leave him and sought help from the neighborhood committee. However, instead of support, a staff member from the women's affairs committee pressured her to terminate the pregnancy, implying that Javokhir was right and that he did not want another child from her. When Zamira protested that her pregnancy was already advanced and she had no intention of having an abortion, the committee worker told her that it was her problem how she would deal with the pregnancy, advising her not to disturb Javokhir anymore, especially since he doubted the child was his. Due to rumors spread by Javokhir that Zamira was interacting with different men and that the child was not his, Zamira's relatives turned away from her. All these events severely affected her mental state. Fortunately, one of her acquaintances allowed Zamira to stay with her temporarily.”
On November 4, 2024, Zamira went to Javokhir's apartment to collect her belongings. He was aware of her arrival and came there as well.
“A verbal altercation ensued between them, and Javokhir began to hit and choke her, and then raped her, threatening that if she told anyone, he would kill her. Despite the threats, Zamira reported the incident to law enforcement. A forensic examination was promptly assigned, which revealed signs of violence on Zamira's body.”
Zamira informed the project’s editorial team that Javokhir continues to harass her. She also mentioned that Javokhir's brother is an active employee in the law enforcement agencies.
“Javokhir continues to disturb her with phone calls, threatens her, and demands that she withdraw her complaint, claiming that with his brother's help and connections, the case will be closed anyway. Zamira is genuinely afraid for her life and the life of her unborn child. Additionally, Zamira fears that the rape case may be closed due to Javokhir's brother, who can influence the investigation through his connections. According to her, the investigator handling Zamira's case has not been in touch with her and does not answer her calls. Zamira does not have the means to hire a lawyer and defend herself.”
In preparing the material for publication, Zamira reported that regarding her complaint about the investigator's inaction, she was informed that the case against Javokhir would be closed.
